What Economic Downturn?

For the News Media, it is often a case of bad news is good news. It seems too that some of Australia’s Politicians think that telling everyone how bad things are (economically), and how bad they could still get, is going to be good for their image. They need to put things into perspective and be more positive.

If you operate a small/medium sized business in Australia, how bad is it? Growth in the economy has slowed from an annual increase of 3 to 4%, to zero. In other words, you could say that the economy is in equilibrium – neither increasing nor decreasing. If we actually go into a Recession (say 2% negative growth), it simply means is that you may need 2% more market share to maintain your status quo.

Unemployment is steady at less than 5% (when many consider full employment is achieved at 5%). If unemployment increases, who will be out of work? Probably middle managers in large organisations and government that have few specific skills that would be useful in small/medium sized business. There will still be a high demand for efficient, productive employees that have the right attitude.

It is unlikely that your business relies upon the state of the Share Market. If you didn’t have the Media telling us several times a day what is happening on the Share Market, it would have little affect on the running of your business (in terms of your customer’s confidence levels).

Interest rates will continue to fall. Money may be harder to get, but if your business is making profits, and you keep a tight rein on Debtors/Stock, you can expand using your own funds. To borrow, you need a Business Plan to show Investors how you plan to repay the money. That Business Plan is good to do anyway to justify in your own mind the rationale to expand rather than improve what you already have.

The exchange rate (at US$0.65) is great if you can expand with some export sales. If you are an Importer, then the cost increase caused by the sudden fall in the A$ will have a one time inflationary affect on your selling prices. A rise in the exchange rate (say back to US$0.75) in the next year or so will actually cause deflation with lower priced imports and even cheaper fuel (and so, transport costs).

After the initial ‘fright’ by business (no one likes unwelcome surprises), people will adapt to the new norm, and it will be business as usual. After all, there are still the same number of people in the world, and they all need to eat, sleep, wear clothes, and consume goods. In the Third World, there is still the same urgency to climb up the “Ladder of Success” to reach the comfort zone of the Middle Class. After things settle (or the bad news becomes the norm), confidence levels will eventually come back.

That is something you can virtually guarantee.

As you know, to every upside, there is eventually a downside, and vice versa. It is just that with the emergence of strong demand from the likes of China and India, the upside became the norm for so long, we forgot what the downside was like. People got complacent, and in business that meant that businesses did not have the pressure to operate at maximum efficiency.

If there ever was a time to take a complete “Bird’s Eye View” on your business, it is now !! It is certainly no time to sit on your hands and not change, and to not invest in new technologies that will ensure your business thrives - even during this (so called) Global Economic Downturn.
